Differentiated Homework

I’m wondering if it would be useful to post answers for homework and let students decide how much homework they should do. That is, if they believe they understand the concepts after working a couple of problems, then they can stop, but they have the answers in case they aren’t sure. On the one hand, this would be a great way to promote responsibility for their own learning; on the other hand, will my students (especially the 9th graders!) have enough maturity to handle this? What about homework grades?
