It might be a little too ed-school, but I do rather like the concept of “jigsawing” — splitting the class up into several groups, and then recombining them into different groups that each study a single aspect of the lesson. Then the groups are returned to their original formation, and the group members share with their group what they have learned.

This is an interesting geometry lesson on triangle segments using this technique.
